CHARLIE Austin is aiming to improve his goalscoring celebrations after admitting his first goal for Burnley took him by surprise.

The former Swindon Town striker bashfully raised an arm after breaking his Clarets duck in fortuitous fashion on Saturday.

A deflection off his face, following new boy Keith Treacy’s initial shot, proved enough to ignite a fightback from 2-0 down and salvage a point against Watford in the end.

“You’ve got to be in the right place at the right time,” Austin smiled.

He can now. There wasn’t much to smile about in his first few months at Turf Moor as he suffered a dislocated shoulder in training and was sidelined after surgery.

With a decent pre-season under his belt the former Swindon Town striker admits he feels 100 per cent again.

And now, with a strong chance of starting his first game since February as Martin Paterson is set for an extended spell on the sidelines, he is ready to show why manager Eddie Howe made him his first Burnley signing.

“The last six months have been a bit of a blur for me and I’ve tried to forget it,” said the 22-year-old.

“It’s a learning curve for me.

“I’ve had to do a lot of rehab and prehab on my shoulder before training and before games and stuff to make it stronger.

“But I just want to kick on with my Burnley career from now on.

“I've felt good over the summer and had a good pre-season with the fitness coach, Jon (Dalzell), and now I'm just raring to go.”

With Howe looking for continuity, Austin is likely to spearhead the attack with Jay Rodriguez against Burton Albion.

The Burnley boss is refusing to underestimate the League Two side, who were the opponents for his first game at Turf Moor in January.

“I've never played against Burton, but they played here in the FA Cup the weekend I signed,” said Austin, who is hoping to go beyond the Carling Cup first round for the first time in his career.

“When I first signed for Swindon I was cup-tied and they lost to Wolves, and then we went out in the first round to Leyton Orient last season.

“You want to win every game you participate in.

“There's no point going into it thinking 'it's only Burton in the Carling Cup' – you want to win and confidence is what we need.

“If we can get a good win (tonight) it will stand us in good stead for Saturday (at Crystal Palace).

“And if I can get another goal it would be good for my confidence as well.”

He added: “I was over the moon that it went in.

“With it coming off my face it was more relief than anything.

“I thought at 2-1 I'd better not celebrate and just get the ball back to centre.

“Like any forward it's nice to score goals to get us back in the game at 2-1.

"It gave us a lift and the fans got behind us and Keith scored a good header at the end.

“If we take that into tonight's game we should give it a good go.”
