MARTIN Paterson is expected to miss at least two games after pulling out of international duty with another thigh problem.

The striker was yesterday due to meet up with the Northern Ireland squad for their Euro 2012 qualifier with the Faroe Islands on Wednesday.

But he was withdrawn from Burnley’s opening day 2-2 draw with Watford after complaining of a niggle at half time and is set to undergo a scan tomorrow.

The problem is not thought to be serious. However, after he missed most of last season with a persistent thigh injury the Clarets aren’t taking any chances.

It is unlikely that he will recover in time to feature against Palace at the weekend and will also sit out tomorrow night's Carling Cup first round match at home to Burton Albion (kick-off 7.45pm), which may lead to young striker Alex MacDonald remaining at Turf Moor instead of joining up with the Scotland Under 21 squad for Wednesday's friendly with Norway U21s.

“Pato was just not feeling 100 per cent,” confirmed Burnley manager Eddie Howe.

“I wouldn't say it was a recurrence of any injury but he just said he couldn't play to his full potential, so he had to come off, which is a huge blow for us.

“We need to make sure we get Pato 100 per cent fit.

“He's done all the pre-season and been fine so it came as a bit of a surprise.

"I thought he looked quite sharp first half as well.”

Paterson has been a target of Portsmouth's all summer, with the south coast club's most recent bid tipping £2.5million.

The Clarets have fought off all bids for the striker so far.
