JONATHAN Fielding is backing his men to help him get his hands on the one piece of silverware that eluded him last season and believes Ramsbottom can lift the Worsley Cup tomorrow in “one of the biggest finals ever”.

Ramsbottom won the league and Twenty20 last term but were beaten in the Worsley Cup final by a Colne side inspired by a sensational bowling display from Pakistani pace ace Anwar Ali.

And the veteran spinner is determined to pick up the trophy this time around on an occasion he relishes.

“The Worsley Cup final is known by everyone in cricket,” said Fielding. “It is probably the biggest game there is in league cricket in terms of history, reputation and crowd – and it is a game everyone wants to play in.

“I can’t wait for it and if the weather is nice it will be mega. It will be a massive crowd and it could be one of the biggest finals ever between two evenly matched sides.”

Reigning Lancashire League champions Ramsbottom have stuttered in the past fortnight and have lost three games on the spin, including a record breaking clash at Rawtenstall last Sunday when his side was beaten despite scoring 306.

“That was unbelievable,” he said. “We batted well, bowled well and fielded well and Rawtenstall were magnificent.

“Last week shows just how tight the league is this year. There are some really good professionals this year and the amateurs are stepping up to the plate.

“Both Church and ourselves are very similar in the fact that we have been inconsistent – but if we both play to our maximum tomorrow the final will be a classic.”
