CRAIG Fergusson says Church are relaxed and ready for their colossal Worsley Cup final clash with Ramsbottom and are determined to make it a day to remember by lifting the famous old trophy.

Church have only won the Worsley Cup once in their history, back in 1974 when they beat Nelson in the only final to be played at their West End ground.

But as the showpiece makes a first return to West End tomorrow, skipper Fergusson is hoping his men shine on the biggest stage in league cricket.

“Everyone is excited and there has been a tremendous amount of work put in around the ground ever since we found out we were hosting the final,” said Fergusson.

“It’s a huge occasion and hopefully a happy one for everyone and we are all looking forward to the game immensely.

“But as a set of players we are relaxed and we know what we have to do.

“Our professional Saeed Anwar is a big believer in getting all the lads relaxed and ready for the game – and hopefully that will pay off.

“Yes, of course there is going to be pressure when the game starts and there will be nerves but as a team we feel that we can go out there and give our best.”

Fergusson was faced with a dilemma this week when he had to pick his team for the final – and added: “It was a tough selection.

“With needing a minimum of five bowlers someone had to miss out.

“It was a tough decision. Phil Howard, who has played his part for us all season, missed out and he was gutted but has taken it well and is right behind the team.”, Church, who are fourth in the Lancashire League one place above Ramsbottom, gained a psychological edge over their final foes a fortnight ago when they won in the league at Acre Bottom.

But despite that result mirroring the events before the semi-final when Church beat Nelson a week before the successful last-four clash, Fergusson insists nothing can be read into that result.

“We played some good cricket to beat Ramsbottom,” he said. “But as I said before the Nelson semi-final a cup match is a one-off, a totally different game and anything can happen.

“Ramsbottom are a good side and we will have to be at our best to beat them.

“But we will go out there with the positives and take the rest from there.”
