GIRLS at Oswaldtwistle St Marys had to temporarily put their friendships to one side as both teams reached the final of the Accrington Carnival girls football tournament.

In what turned out to be a keenly contested match between the club’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams, it took a penalty shoot-out to finally separate them.

The match finished 2-2 at the end of normal time; Olivia Otley and Kelsey Oakes scoring for the ‘A’ team with two cracking goals by ‘B’ team captain, Georgia Whalley taking the game to spot kicks.

And it was the ‘B’ team who held their nerve, winning the shoot-out 3-1.

The winning team, managed by Tony McDaid, included Nasareen McDaid, Mia Sparkes, Georgia Whalley, Erin McDaid, Jessica Stevenson, Poppy Baron and Georgia Pilkington.

In the boys competition, Greyhound Ford beat St Annes and St Joseph’s in the U11s final with Brierfield Celtic beating Ossie St Mary’s in the U13s event.

Ossie St Mary’s U13s won a kit from sponsors Keenan’s Estate Agents while all finalists will receive a training session from Accrington Stanley manager John Coleman and his assistant Jimmy Bell.

The Keenans Shield was presented by Mike Keenan with the help of main sponsor Bill Braysford from Rishton Waste Paper. The finals were held at Accrington and Rossendale College.
