BLACKBURN ROVERS fans admire him for his defensive skills. But Aussie women are hoping they can get around soccer star Lucas Neill to score a date.

The Socceroo international has been ranked favourite to win Australian magazine Cleo's most eligible bachelor' competition.

The magazine has Neill listed among the country's hottest home-grown talent and readers are being asked to vote for their favourite beefcake from 50 contenders, including actors, surfers, rugby players and radio hosts.

The 28-year-old Pisces' profile at the on-line voting page describes him as "one of the heroes of Australia's World Cup campaign" and "arguably the Socceroos best player".

It continues: "While his rugged good looks make him a favourite among female fans, he also enormous respect from team mates and is considered a potential captain once Mark Viduka retires."

Despite the competition, Neill is expected to come top of the league and clinch the title, according to Australian bookmaker Centrebet. They have given him odds of 6-4 to be named Bachelor of the Year in next month's edition.

Neill's success with the ladies is being put down to his raised profile after representing his country in Germany this year.

Gerard Daffy, from Centrebet, said: "Before the World Cup Neill could've walked naked down the street in any Australian city. Now women would rip his clothes off if he went for a stroll."

And readers will have to settle for kissing the pin-up's poster, as Neill has a girlfriend.
