ACCRINGTON Stanley full back Joe Jacobson has apologised to Oldham Athletic after his former club threatened legal action over a post on the player’s Twitter account.

Jacobson joined Stanley on loan from Oldham in November before moving to the Crown Ground on a permanent deal on the last day of the January transfer window, but angered his old side by last week by tweeting that the Latics’ players had not been paid.

The club later released a statement on their official website saying: “Oldham Athletic are considering taking legal action against former player Joe Jacobson.

“It follows his statement on Twitter today saying ‘the Oldham boys have not been paid again’, which is totally untrue.

“The club can confirm that ALL contracted players and staff have been paid on time this month.

“They say it is unhelpful when former players publish untruths on social media and the club is not prepared to sit back and do nothing about it.

“Latics contacted Jacobson, who immediately removed the statement from Twitter.”

Jacobson later posted on his Twitter account: “Apologies if people and the club took my comments in the wrong context.”

Delayed wages were a source of frustration for players at Stanley in the second half of the season as the squad twice saw their salaries paid late by the Reds.

Stanley had slipped into financial difficulties as the club’s ownership saga rumbled on, but the resolution of that situation in early April has since led to new owner Ilyas Khan paying wages owed to players.
