STEVENAGE boss Graham Westley has warned his side that they still have work to do to reach Old Trafford – as the Boro bid to avoid a repeat of their collapse in the Blue Square Premier play-offs two years ago.

Stevenage travel to Accrington Stanley for Friday’s semi final second leg leading 2-0 after goals from Stacy Long and Oswaldtwistle-born former Red Joel Byrom put them in the driving seat on Sunday.

But Westley’s side beat Cambridge 3-1 at Broadhall Way in a Blue Square Premier play-off semi final first leg in 2009, only to lose 3-0 in the second leg and miss out on promotion, and they were so depleted on Sunday that they had to field two goalkeepers on the bench – as well as their retired first-team coach Dino Maamria, now 39.

Westley said: “Two-nil is an advantage and we’d sooner have that than not. But it is as it is.

“We know it’s going to be a very tough second leg, it’s a difficult place to go and it’s going to take one very strong determined performance from us to make sure we get through.

“The whole environment is set out to make your life difficult, from the dugouts to the pitch.

“Their home record speaks for itself and every detail will need to be taken into account to make sure we put the right performance in.”
