A DEFIANT Steve Kean has vowed ‘we will finish the job on Sunday’ after a gutsy 1-1 draw with Manchester United left Rovers’ Premier League lives still hanging in the balance.

Wayne Rooney’s debatable 72nd minute penalty earned the visitors the point they needed to secure a record-breaking 19th top flight title – leaving Rovers facing final day drama at relegation rivals Wolves.

Once Rooney had cancelled out Brett Emerton’s first half opener, boss Kean opted to ‘stick’ rather than ‘twist’ as his side settled for the point in a cautious finale.

The result moved Kean’s men to 40 points but, with Blackpool, Wigan and Wolves all winning, Rovers still could need a win at Molineux to preserve their top flight status.

Kean said: “It is a huge game but we have to continue like we have done over the last eight games, where we have picked up six positive results.

“So we go there with work to be done but I am confident we will get it done and this time next Sunday evening, we will be done and dusted and safe.

“We are in roughly the same position as we were before, although things are a little bit tighter. Everyone underneath us has the work to do. It is all in our hands.

“It is totally in our hands. I am slightly disappointed but I think it will prove to be another valuable point.”

Rovers’ point sees them end their Ewood Park campaign with just two home defeats since the turn of the year and unbeaten in six of their last eight games.

But defeat at Wolves on Sunday would leave them anxiously looking at results elsewhere, something Kean is desperate to avoid.

“We need the same performance as we have been giving,” he said. “We need a performance and with that performance, I am sure we will get points.

“I am convinced if we keep giving these performances we will be fine. Let’s go and get those points. “If we play the way we have been playing we will get at least a point. This is a massive game for the club. It is about making sure we maintain Premier League survival.

“We were 12 minutes away from being safe last week and less than 20 minutes away this week but I am very confident we will do what is required.

“You never want to be in this position. What this season has been is bizarre with twists and turns so why can’t we go and beat Wolves?”

The Rovers boss was also quick to defend his side’s cautious end to the game as they settled for the point rather than pushing for a decisive winner that would have secured safety.

Kean said: “I think the performance was tremendous. I think everyone sees the togetherness and will to win was there.

“As soon as you get the decision against you then Manchester United are left with the point they need to clinch the title.

“We can understand the fans frustrations but if you press for the ball we could be sitting here without anything from the game.

“Before the game if everyone in the ground thought we would take a point against the champions then they probably would have taken that.

"I felt as though we deserved to win the game though.”

Junior Hoilett (hamstring) and Chris Samba (groin and hamstring) will be assessed in the next couple of days.
