A number of players are expected to leave Turf Moor this summer as boss Eddie Howe looks to reshape his squad for another tilt at promotion next season.

Out-of-contract midfielders Remco van der Schaaf and Kevin McDonald have not been offered new terms while striker Steven Thompson is understood not to have taken up the option of a 12-month extension.

Howe has also held talks with a number of contracted players since the Clarets ended the season with a 1-1 home draw against Cardiff City.

With the Burnley boss likely to have to move players on in order to make room for new signings, it is possible a number could be put up for sale.

Chris Iwelumo is a candidate to be transfer-listed after the club were prepared to listen to offers in January.

He could be joined by goalkeeper Lee Grant, who lost his place to long-serving Claret Brian Jensen following the home defeat to Ipswich at the beginning of April.

Leon Cort, who became Brian Laws’ first money signing for £1.5million in January 2010, is not expected to feature for the Clarets again after spending the last five months of the season on loan at Preston.

However, a permanent move to Deepdale is not thought to be on the cards following North End’s relegation to League One.

Meanwhile, there is confusion surrounding the future of Wade Elliott, who signed an improved contract under Owen Coyle in 2008 which was due to expire this summer.

I understand the removal of a clause in that deal in late December triggered a two-year extension.
