JASON Roberts believes Blackburn Rovers are capable of spoiling Manchester United’s title party on Saturday as they bid to hit back after a humiliating 7-1 defeat at Old Trafford earlier in the season.

Manchester United need only a point at Ewood Park to claim the Premier League crown and surpass Liverpool’s record of 18 titles, but Rovers want a result to secure their own top flight safety.

Steve Kean’s side are three points above the drop zone with a superior goal difference to the teams below them in the table and will be eager to avoid taking their battle against the drop to the last day, when they face a potential thorny trip to relegation rivals Wolves.

Rovers lost 7-1 at Old Trafford in November – a result that did Sam Allardyce no favours in the weeks before he was controversially sacked – but have been beaten by United just twice in the league at Ewood since their return to the Premier League in 2001.

“We’ve beaten Manchester United at home before,” said Roberts.

“We have to be positive. We were positive against West Ham and hopefully we’ll take that into the Man United game.

“The game at Old Trafford was one of those things when it seemed that everything they hit went in, but we’ve got four points from the last two games and we’ll take that into the next game.”

And both Roberts and Kean have insisted that Rovers’ focus is on their own plight rather than United’s title bid.

“It is not a case of us stopping Manchester United, it is a case of us doing our job,” said Kean.

Roberts added: “Stopping Manchester United winning the title won’t come into my own personal thinking.

“While I wouldn’t relish the opportunity of stopping them winning the title, I would relish the opportunity of beating Manchester United.

“That doesn’t come around often in your career and it is something we would want to do regardless of the title. I think they have been fantastic this year.

“The fans are always fantastic when we are playing the bigger clubs because they like to see us in amongst it and trying to beat these £300m teams.

“It is always exciting seeing these teams play and even better when they walk away with no points. I think we can do that.”
