CHURCH’S fielders are upping their game – just to avoid collecting a new club award.

Any misfields or fumbles are greeted with crys of “Stan” from team-mates – and that is down to a points system that will earn the worst fielder the Stan Johnson Trophy at the end of the season.

Long-standing West End member Stan Johnson left a legacy to Church in his will – but also wanted an award creating to try and improve the current squad.

And the trophy has been well received by the players, who are determined not to be on the receiving end come September.

“No-one wants that sort of prize,” said wicketkeeper Sam Tucker.

“After each game the players sit down and hand out points for the day’s worst fielder.

“And at the end of the season the player with the most points gets the award.

“But it has the effect of raising the standards of all the players.

"People work harder and harder to try and improve their game so it is having a good effect.”
