STEVE Kean has called for his Blackburn Rovers side to banish their relegation fears once and for all by ending their Hammers hoodoo in style this afternoon.

The Rovers boss knows a first win at Upton Park since 1994 would virtually secure Premier League survival for his men, and insists nothing else but victory will be on their minds.

Going into the game six points above bottom of the table side West Ham and with a vastly superior goal difference, a draw would probably be enough to stop the Hammers catching them in the fight for safety.

But Kean insists there will be no thoughts of caution as they go all out for just their second Upton Park win since 1963 to prevent any danger of a final day scramble for survival.

Kean said: “The task has been to end it as quickly as we can. We said to the lads before the Bolton game, back to back wins at this stage of the season was going to kill the other teams.

“If they get a point, they will look at our result. From Newcastle down, no one won apart from us and for the teams around and about us, that kills them mentally. Let’s hope that is the same on Saturday.

“If other teams around us drop points and we get the points, you almost take yourselves out of the firing line.

“There is massive pressure on them, especially if they don’t get three points on Saturday. If they don’t beat us then that doesn’t bode well for them.

“They see this as a must win. They are going to try and dictate play. We won’t set up just to play for a draw. If we can go and get the first goal then that is massive. The whole dimension of the game changes if you get the first goal.

“We won’t be going there trying not to get beat, we will be looking to get that first goal.”

Rovers’ dismal Upton Park record will leave the club’s fans fearful about Saturday’s trip to London, but Kean insists it has no bearing on the next 90 minutes.

“You could use all the old cliches,” said Kean. “Records are up there to be broken, they are just stats and I am not even sure if the players will know that stat.

“I don’t think they really look at that. I suppose it is different if it is a Ryan Nelsen, or someone who has been here for so long, like Morten or Brett.

“Players like that have been in the club for a long time and might think ‘we never get a result here’. The rest of the dynamics of the group, there have been so many changes and new players.

“Junior Hoilett, Phil Jones, Martin Olsson, players like this won’t even think about Upton Park being a hoodoo ground. All you do is focus on the good bits for us and we go out and approach the game in a positive manner.

“It is about us, it is not about Wolves or West Ham or Manchester United.

“If we win there, I think we are out of it. Three weeks ago everyone was saying it was going to be a really high points tally and then all of a sudden it has dipped.

“I think three points and our goal difference will see us safe.”
