Simon Kerrigan took five wickets in 32 balls as Lancashire dismissed Warwickshire for 97 and romped to a 147-run victory before tea on the third afternoon of their County Championship clash at Edgbaston.

An unpredictable pitch – with variable bounce for the seamers and noticeable turn for the spinners – left the home side with little hope of survival as they were set 245 after Lancashire had lost their last six wickets for 71.

Slow left-armer Kerrigan returned astonishing figures of 7-1-7-5 and spin partner Gary Keedy claimed 3-2 in 26 balls.

Red Rose captain Glen Chapple put his side on the way to an emphatic result by becoming only the fifth current county bowler to reach 800 first-class wickets.

William Porterfield became victim number 800 when feathering a catch to wicketkeeper Gareth Cross before lunch and Chapple made it 801 when Ian Bell lobbed up a simple chance to Karl Brown, running across from square-leg.

Burnley’s James Anderson went wicketless, but Warwickshire, having reached 68-2, were sunk as soon as Kerrigan joined the attack.
