CLITHEROE’S Carl Garner has landed the Evo-Stik League’s manager of the month award ... just four weeks into his managerial career.

Garner, the former chairman, took the reins at the end of last month after Peter Smith quit the Shawbridge hotseat.

And he has got off to an amazing start, winning five and drawing three of the club’s eight games during April.

That run moved Clitheroe into sixth spot in First Division North, earning him the division’s Manager of the Month award.

Garner said: “It’s amazing, and a great tribute to all the players here.

“We kept five clean sheets in those eight games, and conceded just four goals in that time.

“That was special for us because every team we played was above us in the league.

“I just tried to create a new mentality in the lads. We worked harder and put a smile on their faces.

“I’m so proud of all the players here, and this award is as much for them as me.”

Garner has already moved to sign up six of his players on contract for next season.

He will be presented with the award before Chorley’s play-off game against Fylde tomorrow.
