MIDFIELDER Dean Marney believes sharing out the goals will be key to boosting Burnley’s dented play-off hopes.

Although the Clarets can boast 15 Championship goalscorers this season, only Jay Rodriguez has been on the scoresheet in their last four winless games, which has forced them further away from the promotion pack.

But after being named captain in the absence of Graham Alexander, Clarke Carlisle and Wade Elliott, Marney has urged everyone to take responsibility for not giving up on their top six ambitions without a fight.

“Jay’s been outstanding, but we’re probably not creating as much as we would have liked in the last few games and that’s been one of the problems really,” said the fit-again midfield man ahead of this afternoon’s trip to Leicester City.

“We all need to try to chip in with a few.

If we win 1-0 and one of the centre halves scores that’s great.”

And after early goals were key to beating Crystal Palace and Hull City last month, Marney has told Burnley to hit the ground running at the Walkers Stadium and do themselves justice.

“We’d got ourselves in a great position and we’ve let ourselves down a little bit to be honest, but we’re still in with a chance,” said the 27-year-old, who returned last weekend after missing the trip to Bristol City with a medial knee ligament strain.

“It’s important to try to get off to a good start (today). The first goal away from home is always massive.

“If you can get that quite often the home fans turn a little bit and put pressure on the players and it makes it a lot harder for the home side.

“Hopefully our dip’s out the way and we can have a good, strong finish because if you can get in the play-offs the rewards are unbelievable.

“We’re still there or thereabouts.

“With one more final push I’m sure we’ll be in the play-offs.

“(Leicester) have got a lot of good players. But I’m sure the gaffer will have his gameplan of what he wants us to do and we’ll try to do that to the best we can.

“I’m sure we’ll get a good result.

“We’ve done well against teams in the top half.”

Of his new-found responsibilities as captain, Marney added: “To get the armband was really nice.

I’d only had a couple of days’ training before the game so the gaffer showed a lot of faith in me to put me straight back in.”
