SAM Allardyce believes Blackburn Rovers would not be fighting against relegation this season had he been left in charge at Ewood Park.

The former Rovers boss was surprisingly sacked by Venky’s in December, with new owner Anuradha Desai claiming he wasn’t producing ‘entertaining football’.

Now, ahead of tomorrow’s clash at home to Birmingham with both sides just two points clear of the drop zone, Allardyce has expressed his surprise at his old side’s precarious position.

When asked if they would be struggling if he was in charge, he said: “No. In my lifetime as a manager I’ve only been relegated once. That was when I took charge of Notts County around February and it was far too late for me to save them.

“I’ve only improved results. I know that sounds like blowing my own trumpet, but that’s been the case for me.”

Steve Kean’s men are winless in seven Premier League matches but an impressive draw at Arsenal last weekend has raised hopes of a revival around Ewood Park.

Rovers boss Kean insists spirit and confidence is high in the camp, with his predecessor Allardyce insisting his squad should be more than good enough to beat the drop.

“I’m surprised because I’ve worked with those players, I know what they’re capable of,” said Allardyce.

“They’re a very good balance of young players and senior players together which is a good blend, particularly for the Premier League.

“You’ve got very good young players with lots of energy, lots of athleticism and you’ve got old, experienced players particularly for this stage of the season that’s needed to pull you through.”
