BLACKBURN Rovers chairman John Williams is seeking clarity on his role at the club with his own Ewood Park future shrouded in uncertainty.

Williams’ 13-year Rovers regime has seen them universally regarded as ‘one of the best run clubs in the Premier League’ but Venky’s November takeover has left him unsure about his position.

Venky’s chairman Anuradha Desai has already told the Lancashire Telegraph ‘Williams’ position is safe’ but he wants to know what is expected of him before making a final decision on his future.

Desai is expected to make her first trip to Ewood Park early next year where Williams will relish the chance to discuss whether he still has a role in taking the club forward.

Sources close to Williams say he has the best interests of the club at heart but is growing increasingly concerned he does not have a part to play in Venky’s vision.

The owners’ decision to sack manager Sam Allardyce took the board by surprise last Monday, with Williams given the unenviable task of delivering the axe to the boss he had enjoyed a good relationship with over the last two years.

It is understood the chairman is at much in the dark about Venky’s plans as the moment as the majority and is keen to know what role is planned for him in the coming months.

Williams has been one of the most influential chairmen in the Premier League for the past decade, having been given almost complete autonomy in the day-to-day running of the club, but that appears to have changed with the owners wanting to take a more hands on role.

It is understood he has no problems with that but would only continue as the club’s chairman if he believes he still has a valuable part to play.

The current board or previous owners the Walker Trust were not given the slightest inkling about the dramatic changes Venky’s would make once they took control.

But both parties still believe the club had to be sold and that Venky’s were the best potential buyers interested.

If Williams decided it was time to leave Rovers, he would have no shortage of offers from the world of football.

It is believed he will only quit the club though if he is certain he can’t be of any help to the new owners, and will hope to hold talks next month.
