RAY Putterill scored twice and set up another as Accrington Stanley knocked out League One side Oldham Athletic to reach the second round of the FA Cup this afternoon.

Stanley came into the game on the back of poor league form but had beaten higher division opposition in each of the last five cup competitions they had entered and went ahead in the eighth minute at the Crown Ground as Putterill found the net.

Putterill, making his first start for more than two months after a lengthy ban for insulting behaviour towards a referee in a non-league game last season, then provided the pass for Jimmy Ryan to make it 2-0 nine minutes before half time.

And Putterill scored his second of the game in the 52nd minute to put Stanley 3-0 up, although they had to hang on for victory in the end.

Warren Feeney pulled a goal back in the 69th minute and Dale Stephens' penalty six minutes later gave Paul Dickov's Oldham side momentum, but Paul Black was denied an equaliser by the post late on.
