ALEX MacDonald’s stunning 30-yard strike clinched this top of the totesport.com League West clash for leaders Burnley.

The 20-year-old had put the unbeaten Clarets in front in the 49th minute with his third goal of the season, only to see it cancelled out by Macclesfield on the hour at the end of a quick break down the right.

But after Richard Eckersley made a lung-bursting run himself down the right and squared, MacDonald wrapped his right foot around the ball and fired into the top right corner.

The former Scotland Under 19 international’s opener was just as cool a finish, as he lobbed advancing goalkeeper Jack Cudworth after timing his run well to meet Chris Anderson’s through ball.

The Clarets were brighter after the break and quickly went in front through MacDonald’s clever lob.

Macclesfield were sparked back into life when Adam Roberts buried captain Matthew Lowe’s clever backheel.

But MacDonald’s superb strike was worthy of winning any game, and Ashley Hoskin’s side have now dropped only two points from a possible 18.
