THE future of Accrington Stanley managing director Dave O’Neill remained uncertain last night after reports of his resignation at a board meeting following Saturday’s home win over Macclesfield Town.

O’Neill has been in charge of the day-to-day running of Stanley since Eric Whalley stepped down as chairman in the summer of 2009 but disagreements between the managing director and multi-millionaire benefactor Ilyas Khan over the future of the club are understood to have come to a head at Saturday night’s meeting.

Khan became the club’s non-executive chairman when his cash saved the club from winding up proceedings in November but he had previously confirmed his intention to step down at the next board meeting, in line with a long-held agreement with O’Neill.

Khan, though, is said to have concerns over elements of O’Neill’s protracted takeover of Whalley’s majority shareholding in the club, which had been nearing completion.

O’Neill and Khan had previously had differences over the solutions to Stanley’s financial crisis last autumn and there have been unconfirmed reports since Saturday’s meeting that O’Neill has resigned.

O’Neill is yet to confirm that, however – saying he would be making no comment at this stage when contacted by the Lancashire Telegraph.

Khan and chief executive Rob Heys were unavailable for comment yesterday.

Khan, who has previously mooted his desire to move Stanley to a new stadium, recently announced plans to hold a meeting with fans next month to discuss the possibility of the club’s ownership being passed into the hands of the supporters in the near future.

Club directors were given the authority in January to increase the share capital in the club by £200,000 if they so wished - a move that, if exercised, would dilute the majority shareholding that is currently held by Whalley and is due to be transferred to O’Neill.

The latest developments come just days before Wednesday’s Carling Cup second round tie at home to Newcastle.

Sky Sports had conducted a lengthy interview with O’Neill last week to preview the game, but it is now unclear whether he will be still be at the club by the time the match takes place.
