ACCRINGTON Stanley have narrowed down their search for new players after choosing the six trialists they will take to Devon for their pre-season tour.

Stanley fielded 14 trialists during their first pre-season friendly at Clitheroe on Tuesday but have now cut that down to six.

Former Macclesfield captain Sean Hessey, 31, looks set to be the man to replace the departed Darran Kempson in central defence with ex-Tranmere winger Andy Parkinson, also 31, another to remain with the squad as they travel to Devon this weekend.

Stanley face Blackpool on Tuesday and Bideford a day later as part of the Joma South West Challenge.

Ray Putterill, a 21-year-old former Liverpool youth team midfielder, will travel after impressing along with ex-Bradford striker Rory Boulding, 21, who has notched three goals in two games this week.

Former Bradford and Blackburn right back Jon Bateson, 20, and young ex-Wigan midfielder Michael Jukes are also still on trial and bidding to earn deals.

Stanley completed the signing of striker Craig Lindfield on a one-year contract yesterday, having agreed the deal some weeks ago, although he cannot be registered to play matches until the club’s embargo is lifted.

Accrington currently only have four players registered.

It is understood special dispensation would be granted to allow them to sign sufficient players if their embargo is not lifted by the start of the season, although the club hope that will happen on Tuesday.

In addition to the four registered players, the Reds have nine more waiting to be registered after agreeing contracts. Leam Richardson is also still training with the club.
