BURNLEY defender David Edgar is determined to put a frustrating season behind him and earn his place in the first team squad.

The young Canadian arrived from Newcastle almost a year ago for a £300,000 fee that was settled at tribunal in December but struggled to make the breakthrough under both Owen Coyle and Laws.

But, after impressing at Swansea during a loan spell at the end of last season, he intends to make a good impression when the squad returns for pre-season training on July 1.

"It’s a clean slate, a chance to play and hopefully get in the gaffer’s mind to start come the start of the season," said Edgar, whose target will be shared by full-backs Brian Easton and Richard Eckersley after they were both loaned out last season.

“It was good to get those games in the Championship at the back end of the season and find out what the league was all about.

“It was difficult but I was getting my head down and playing some games to hopefully do enough to get in the gaffer’s mind here.

“I am going to give it a right go, hopefully have a good pre-season and go from there.

"There’s going to be a lot of competition but that’s the only way to better yourself in football.

“We’ve made some good signings and hopefully they can help us improve and push on for promotion again.

"That’s where we want to be and where the fans want us to be.”
