England Under-21 coach Peter Taylor backed David Bentley to provide the solution to England's problem position on the left side of midfield.

The Blackburn player capped a fine individual performance with two goals to help England Under-21s to a 3-1 win over their Norwegian counterparts at Reading last night, leaving Taylor convinced he can star at a higher level.

Peter Whittingham put England ahead with an excellent free-kick in the first half, but Norway equalised through Borre Steenslid in the 52nd minute - only for Bentley to score twice in the next seven minutes to ease England home.

Taylor said: "David is definitely capable of making the full squad. He can use both feet, he has pace, tremendous stamina and very good ability.

"When he scored his two goals, he was playing on the left of a four-man midfield and making some excellent runs.

"He is one of a number of players in this squad who will be capable of breaking into the senior set-up in the future."
