BRIAN Laws has urged Burnley to pull together as the season enters the final furlong and declared: “Let’s make history!”

The Clarets would overcome the biggest financial handicap ever recorded in the Premier League if they were to stay up for a second season.

And the defiant boss believes, with seven games to go, it is well within their grasp to achieve it.

Burnley’s wage budget of £16million is dwarfed by the likes of fellow strugglers Wigan, who spend around two thirds more on player payments.

Laws admits it is a feat that the Clarets remain strongly in the hunt for survival with just over a month to go. Many promoted teams are cut adrift by Christmas, with Derby County being a case in point two years ago.

The Rams were relegated before the end of March and went down with an all-time Premier League low of 11 points.

But Laws stressed the job is far from finished, and encouraged fans to unite for a final push to stave off relegation, starting with Sunday’s mouthwatering clash with Blackburn Rovers at Turf Moor.

That game has taken on even greater significance on the back of defeats to Wolves and Wigan as the Clarets bid to bridge the gap on 17th spot.

“We are not gearing ourselves to go down here; we are gearing ourselves to stay up!” said the 48-year-old, who is determined to prove those who have already written the Clarets off wrong.

“That’s how important these next seven games are and this is a magnificent opportunity.

“We have a real chance to do something that has never been done before on this budget.

“Much bigger clubs than Burnley have spent bigger and already been relegated by the time March comes around.

“Derby and Sunderland (in 2006) are the classic examples of that, yet here we are, with seven games remaining, and still in there fighting.

“I know the players have the ability to do it, and speaking to them as a group they are unanimous in saying, ‘Yes, we still believe we can stay in there’.

“We have a fantastic chance to re-write history, so let’s reignite this campaign, starting against Blackburn.”

Laws added: “Win, lose or draw these players will give everything – as you’ve seen against Wigan.

“We’re going to go all out to try to get the results required to stay in the Premier League.

“The supporters deserve it because they’ve backed them to the hilt.

"If they keep backing them, hopefully at the end of it we’ll be successful.”
