MARTIN Olsson believes Blackburn Rovers’ ‘super six’ can play a major role in the club’s future – but admits the immediate priority is solely securing their Premier League status.

Rovers’ Swedish young gun has established himself as one of a handful of emerging starlets at Ewood Park and, ahead of Birmingham City’s Premier League visit tonight, is confident they can have a huge say in bringing the good times back to East Lancashire.

Centre back Phil Jones, 18, is likely to continue in the heart of Rovers’ defence tonight after Sunday’s man of the match Premier League debut against Chelsea and Olsson believes the club’s youth development policy can only stand them in good stead for the future.

French under 21 international Steven Nzonzi has surprised everyone at Rovers by being an almost Premier League ever present this season, while the likes of Olsson, Junior Hoilett, 19, and Nikola Kalinic, 22, have become regulars, with 20-year-old Algerian Amine Linganzi also breaking into the squad.

For the moment though, 21-year-old Olsson is focusing on recording another home victory tonight as he looks to put any lingering fears of relegation behind him before plotting an even brighter future.

He said: “Right now we just want to take the points and be secured. We don’t want to talk about, ‘Let’s get 10th position’. Once the points are secured and we feel we are still in the Premier League we can start playing our football without the pressure.

“There are five or six of us young players here that have been playing in the Premier League and showing some good qualities. It is always good to have a mixture of youth and experience as we have now.

“We have to show the manager we want to play for Blackburn and want to be a part of the club’s future.

“I hope we have done that in the Premier League this season.

“We have all done that and you can see our potential but we have to keep working hard on our football and train hard every day, and hopefully we can continue to learn and grow with the club.”

Olsson believes Birmingham deserve enormous credit for breaking into the Premier League top 10 this season but also insists Rovers’ form this campaign warrants its own praise.

Sunday’s battling 1-1 draw with title-chasing Chelsea leaves Sam Allardyce’s men with just two defeats to their name all campaign at Ewood.

“It was a very good result but we have been very strong at home and so we had big confidence ahead of the game,” said Olsson.

“The draw has taken a lot of pressure off us. We are closer to being secure and we can finish that tonight. Birmingham are in good form and play some good football.

“We are in good form also and so it will be a good game.

“We will still have the same team and the same squad next season in the main and we feel we will get better. We are still getting to know each other at the moment.

“We haven’t been with each other that long and hopefully next season we will be much stronger.

"We have to keep working hard as a team now.”
