Newcastle Town’s amazing run of 27 straight wins came to an unexpected end at the hands of Colne who battled for every ball and fully deserved the result.

As expected, the runaway league leaders came out of the blocks strongly and the Colne defence were put under intense pressure for the opening 15 minutes.

But the home team became increasingly frustrated at their inability to break down Colne’s stubborn resistance.

The teams went in level at the break but it was Colne who started the second half brighter with Michael Cruz forcing a fingertip save out of Greg Smith.

And in the 54th minute, Nigel Coates’ side took a shock lead when Ted Cockett broke free down the right, beat two defenders and fired beyond Smith.

Colne had two great chances to put the game beyond Newcastle but shots from Mark Threlfall and Joe Garvin lacked power and direction.

But on 70 minutes, Town drew level when sub Alan Naginton tapped in Ryan Dicker’s low cross, although Liam Garbutt had a late chance to win it for Colne but his shot was cleared off the line.
