Lancashire have lost their appeal to retain the services of Francois Du Plessis for the forthcoming season.

Cricket director Mike Watkinson has confirmed that, despite months of concerted effort, Du Plessis, who was Todmorden’s professional three years ago, will be unable to remain as a Lancashire player for the 2010 season due to changes in immigration criteria and rule changes regarding the eligibility of Kolpak players.

Watkinson said: “This is a very disappointing outcome for not only Francois but the county.

“Francois has been an important part of our professional squad since his arrival and was certainly part of our plans going forward.

“We accept the change in the immigration criteria and support the long term objectives associated with this decision.

“However, it’s a shame that certain players who have demonstrated genuine commitment to English cricket and add something to our game will be lost to county cricket.

“His contributions both as a player and clubman will by be missed by all associated with Lancashire and we wish him well with his cricketing career.”

Lancashire coach Peter Moores added: “This is a real disappointment for the players and coaching staff at Lancashire as Francois is an important part of our squad.

“Not only is Francois a very talented cricketer, but during his two years at Lancashire was lauded by everyone in English cricket for his fielding brilliance.”
