ACCRINGTON Stanley produced a stunning second-half performance to hammer Cheltenham Town in League Two this afternoon.

The game had been goalless at the interval after a lifeless first half but Chris Turner broke the deadlock in the 54th minute before Phil Edwards scored from the penalty spot and Bobby Grant found the net twice – the second with a sublime chip from the edge of the box.

Stanley recalled Turner and Luke Joyce to their starting line-up in place of Billy Kee and Jimmy Ryan.

Joyce had the first chance of an uneventful first half, firing over the bar from a short corner routine.

Cheltenham went close when Elvis Hammond was released on the counter attack before cutting inside Phil Edwards and curling wide.

Hayles then beat Edwards and surged into the box but could only hit the side-netting, while Stanley almost took the lead as Scott Brown superbly tipped John Miles' free kick round the post.

But it was 1-0 nine minutes after half time as Turner collected Miles' pass, cut inside and hit a low shot in off the near post for his first senior goal.

It was 2-0 within four minutes as Michael Symes surged past Sam Cox but, even though the striker stayed on his feet, referee Geoff Eltringham controversially pointed to the spot for a trip. Edwards sent the keeper the wrong way with the penalty.

Symes then put Grant clear in the 62nd minute with a flick-on from keeper Ian Dunbavin's long kick, and the left footer calmly beat Cheltenham stopper Scott Brown.

And the Reds scored their fourth in the space of just 14 minutes when Grant created just enough space for himself in a crowded defence to brilliantly produce a goal from nothing, chipping the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Grant even came close to a hat-trick, seeing Brown save his close-range effort, but that miss did not take any of the shine off Stanley's third consecutive home win.
