BURNLEY manager Owen Coyle has praised the performance of new goalkeeper Jonathan Lund in Wednesday night’s reserve match against Liverpool.

Coyle named himself in the side to take on the Reds’ second string in order to influence the development of young players, in particular striker Wes Fletcher, first hand.

And free agent Lund, who signed this week following previous spells with Leeds United and Grimsby Town, caught the manager’s eye in his first outing.

“I was delighted with him. He’d been at Leeds United before and had a bad injury, he’s worked hard on the training ground and we gave him an opportunity. He played very well,” said Coyle.

“He had a couple of big saves in the game.”

Of his role alongside Fletcher he added: “Being a former striker myself I can impart that knowledge and experience, similar to what we did with Jay Rodriguez. It’s just talking him through those positions.

“My strikers are asked to take on a heavy workload in their first team games, so its to show them what’s required at that level, and we think he’s got a chance.

“I thought the boy was outstanding on the night.

“It’s enjoyable being out there, there’s no doubt about that. But the biggest reason is helping develop our young players."
