ACCRINGTON Stanley midfielder John Mullin will see a specialist in the next couple of days to determine whether he can prolong his career.

The former Burnley player has been struggling with an ankle injury for several months and is yet to figure for Stanley this season.

At 34, he is determined to continue playing for as long as he can but there remains a possibility that the outcome of his meeting with the specialist could lead to his retirement.

Mullin activated a clause for a one-year extension to his contract after playing 35 times in his first season with the club and is one of only two players in the squad over the age of 30 - the other being 35-year-old brother Paul.

Andy Procter, 26, is currently captain with John Miles, 27, installed as vice captain.

“John has been plagued by an ankle injury and I think he is going to see a specialist to determine his next step,” said Reds assistant Jimmy Bell.

“It could be, if the news is really bad, that he might have to retire.

“But that’s a last resort because he’s looking to play on for as long as possible.

"And it would be a shame for us because we’re short on experience.

“Paul Mullin is in his 30s but John Miles and Proccy (Andy Procter) are still learning their trade as leaders.

“That’s to be expected, though, and I’m sure they’ll get there and do well for us.”
