ACCRINGTON Stanley could be set to make Mark Hughes their fourth summer signing on Friday.

Hughes – the former Everton and Northampton centre back, rather than the current Manchester City manager – is currently on trial with Stanley at their week-long training camp at an army base near Colchester.

The 22-year-old was offered a new contract with Northampton but it was then withdrawn after the League One club did not receive a response by June 16.

Stanley now hope to bring in the Liverpool-born defender on a free transfer, with assistant manager Jimmy Bell saying: “He’s come down to Colchester with us this week.

"We’ve made him an offer and he is due to give us an answer on Friday.”
