Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker have waxed lyrical about Adam Wharton's performances for Crystal Palace after joining from Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window.

The homegrown Blackburn Rovers midfield has made a stunning start to life in the Premier League, slotting straight into the Eagles midfield.

Wharton has started the last nine Premier League games and was central to Palace's shock 1-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday. Shearer and Lineker picked out the 20-year-old as the star player and suggested he could be a star in the making.

Rovers have clauses in the deal that they will benefit from Wharton's future success but Palace fans already feel like they got a bargain despite Rovers receiving a club-record fee.

Shearer lifted the lid on his discussions with people at Ewood Park when he visited for the FA Cup tie against Newcastle United recently and believes Wharton has a bright future.

"When I was at Blackburn, six or seven weeks ago, they told me about the transfer," Shearer told The Rest is Football

"They said they had to sell him for obvious reasons. They felt as if Palace had got a great deal. They wanted to and needed to get more for him but such was the need to sell.

"They said Palace got him on the cheap. I understand why today. I've been watching him and he's been really impressive.

"Today he was, without doubt, he ran that midfield. When you consider who he was against and the fact it was at Anfield. That's a pretty big thing to say but he was outstanding."

Gary Lineker added: "What a performance, he's so calm on the ball, he doesn't give it away. He never gets flustered.

"He tracks back, gets forward and he has a really good all-round game. He looks like a possible star for the future."
