Andrew Flintoff's return to County Championship action was delayed by overnight rain at the Brit Oval.
Two inspections by umpires George Sharp and Peter Hartley took place at 11am and noon before they decided Surrey's home fixture against Lancashire could begin at 1.10pm.
Wet patches on the outfield prevented any play in the morning session and an early lunch was taken at 12.30pm.
That restricted the first day's allocation to 80 overs, to be played over two two-and-a-half hour sessions.
England all-rounder Flintoff, who underwent a fourth operation on his left ankle last autumn, has not played in the Championship since the innings thrashing of Yorkshire in the Roses match last August.
