KYLE Lafferty handed the Clarets a third-minute lead with his first goal in three months.
The Northern Ireland international completed a well-worked build-up that involved Robbie Blake, Ade Akinbiyi and James O'Connor.
Akinbiyi had a good chance to make it 2-0 five minutes later but failed to test Carlo Nash, on his debut, from close range.
