OWEN Coyle has dismissed speculation linking Burnley with a move for out-of-favour Celtic midfielder Derek Riordan.

But the Clarets boss admitted he was a big fan of the Scotland international.

According to sources north of the border, Riordan is desperate for a move away from Celtic Park and Hoops boss Gordon Strachan is willing to let him leave in the transfer window.

And reports in the national press had suggested Coyle was ready with an offer for the 24-year-old former Hibernian star, and even that the Turf Moor outfit had already been knocked back with a plan to take Riordan on loan.

However, Coyle insists there has been no contact.

He said: "I think it's like anything, we're being linked with him because Derek's saying he might be moving on and because I've stated before that I'm a big admirer of him.

"I've always liked him as a player since he was a young lad at Hibs.

"But I've not spoken to Gordon (Strachan) about him and I'm not one who speaks about other people's players.

"I imagine people have put two and two together on this one and came up with the wrong answer.

"But we've not made any bid for Derek Riorden."
