Natasha Fenton came up with an injury-time winner which gave Rovers Ladies their first Championship win of the season at the third attempt.

Fenton scored in the dying seconds to see off Crystal Palace 3-2, earning Rovers three points at the third time of asking.

Cherelle Khassal’s 13th minute goal was cancelled out by summer signing Jade Richards’ header for the visitors 12 minutes later.

Bianca Baptiste’s strike early in the second half put Palace in control, but Ellie Stewart’s 69th minute penalty brought Rovers back level before Fenton’s came up with the winner late on.

After a patient start, the hosts broke the deadlock shortly before the 15-minute mark. Baptiste ran into the box and played it square for Khassal, who was able to tap it home for her second goal of the season.

In the 25th minute, Rovers got their first goal of the season, following 3-0 and 1-0 defeats at the hands of Leicester and Charlton. Ellie Fletcher’s ball was perfectly placed to find Richards who headed home at the far post.

Five minutes after the restart, Rovers’ defensive mishap allowed Baptiste to pick up the stray ball in midfield and stroll through several challenges before placing the ball home to give Palace the lead.

In the 68th minute, referee Emily Heaslip awarded Blackburn a penalty for handball in the midst of a goalmouth scramble, a decision which took some time to ratify with her assistant.

Rovers defender Stewart stepped up and buried it to the keeper’s right to level the scores with 20 minutes remaining.

Making up for losing to Charlton two weeks ago in stoppage time, Fenton’s cross in the 94th minute deceived everyone in the box and went into the back of the net.

“It’s hard to put into words how we feel. The girls haven’t stopped working. We’ve kept going and going, pushing and pushing,” Fenton said.

“Last time when we played, we conceded late on. Crystal Palace tested us and posed new challenges.

“On the ball today, we weren’t our best, but you couldn’t fault the girls’ hard work for the whole 90 minutes. We just wanted to get those first three points.

“We’ve got a Conti Cup game coming up. We just take each game as it comes, we’ll see that as a good challenge to play WSL opposition (Birmingham City) and then we can take that into our next league game, away at Lewes.

“It’s all good preparation. We’ll learn from today and we can definitely build from here.”
