BURNLEY fans at Turf Moor yesterday were in a state of shock - and almost all were sorry to see Steve Cotterill go.

Assistant manager Steve Davis, former Clarets boss Stan Ternent, ex-Wigan boss Paul Jewell and former Everton manager Joe Royle were some of the names put forward as successors by fans.

But many questioned by the Lancashire Telegraph had been left so stunned that they could not think of a replacement.

  • Dean Baker, 22, of Talbot Street, Burnley, said: "I'm shocked really.

"I thought he had been doing all right and I think the club should have stuck with him.

"He didn't get enough money to spend and I think that frustrated him.

"It's too early to say who the next manager will be. I have no idea."

  • Stephen Whittle, 18, of Kibble Bank, Burnley, said: "It's disappointing news.

"I think he should have been given more time and money. Overall he was a really good manager.

"I dread to think who the next manager will be. There doesn't seem to be any obvious choices."

  • Robert Riley, 16, of Briercliffe Road, Burnley, said "I'm a bit surprised.

"He had no reason to leave because he had a good team and a good squad.

"I'm sure we could have still made the play offs. I bet there are a few clubs who will want Cotterill now.

"I think Paul Jewell would be a really good replacement but I have no idea if he would come here."

  • Adam Steel, 21, of Leyland Road, Burnley, said: "I'm not surprised at all that he's gone.

"I can't fault him as a manager but the team hasn't been getting results.

"At the game the other night against Hull, fans were calling for his head.

"There are a lot of frustrated fans at the moment. Hopefully assistant manager Steve Davis will take the job."

  • Riccardo Dunn, 25, of Hunslet Street, Burnley, said: "I think Cotterill has had enough and walked out.

"He is a good manager and something must have gone wrong inside the club to make him leave.

"He has made some good signings but the team hasn't played well enough this year.

"I have no idea who the next manager will be."

  • John Lister, 42, of Dall Street, Burnley, said: "It is a big surprise.

"Cotterill is a good manager who has done well with the resources he has had here.

"Steve Davis might be a good choice for the next manager and they might fetch Stan Ternent back, you never know."

  • June Tomlinson, 44, of Dall Street, Burnley, said: "I think Cotterill is a really good manager.

"I can't believe he has gone because he was the right man for the job.

"I'm really sorry to see him go. I have not got a clue who will take over now."

  • Peter Knight, 50, of Brokenhurst Street, Burnley, said: "Cotterill has done a good job but the team had gone a bit stagnant lately.

"We have found it really hard to get a result. I think he has been really limited by the finances at his disposal.

"We will find it difficult to get a good manager now because so many teams are looking."

  • John McGivern, 50, of Roundhill Avenue, Burnley said: "I think we are in a bad situation now.

"There must have been something said in the board room to make him go. I think Steve Davis should go for the job."

  • Daniel Lancaster, 21, of Airdrie Crescent, Burnley, said: "I'm shocked. I thought he was doing all right.

"Someone told me earlier that he had left but I did't believe them.

"He's a good manager and we should have kept him. It's a shame more money isn't invested in the club because we will struggle to get a new boss."

  • Jim Powers, 60, of Athletic Street, Burnley, said: "I am shocked because I thought he would be given more time.

"I just hope we have got someone lined up.

"The chairman might be thinking because we are getting new grounds maybe we need a new manager.

"My choice for the next manager would be Joe Royle I think he would do a really good job and I'm sure he has always had a soft spot for Burnley."

  • Joan Emmerson, 60, of Brunshaw Road, Burnley, said: "I'm really surprised that Steve would leave.

"He was doing all right but I always thought he had a really good future ahead of him.

"The team wasn't playing well recently but I always thought things would improve.

"Steve was a good appointment. I want the club to get another young, up and coming manager."

  • Anne Whittaker, 52, of Brownhill Avenue, Burnley, said: "I always liked Cotterill and I certainly don't think he did a bad job.

"He was a really enthusiastic manager and I hope that whoever they get next puts as much energy and enthusiasm into it."

  • Lisa Whittaker, 25, of Brownhill Avenue, Burnley, said: "The club had done well with him and it's a real shame that he's gone.

"It will be difficult replacing him because he was such a good manager.

"I have no idea who the next manager will be but I hope it's someone good."

  • Adam Patrick, 29, of Brunshaw Avenue, Burnley, said: "I think Cotterill has just walked out on the club.

"I think he has had a bit of criticism and he hasn't liked it.

"I don't know who we are going to get but this is not a crisis for the club.

"It is a big shock that he is gone but we can still have a good season.

"There's hasn't been much investment in the club and I hope that changes so we can attract the right manager.

"The important thing now is how the players react."

  • Nora Loftus, 61, of Brunshaw Avenue, Burnley, said: "It's a sad day for the club.

"I always thought he was a good manager we have not had the best season so far but we were doing okay and he should have been given more time.

"I don't really know who we will get next but hopefully this can be a step forward for the club."
