Goalkeeper David Raya is set to see a specialist as Rovers wait on news of the extent of the facial injury picked up in the draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Raya suffered a broken nose and required stitches in what boss Tony Mowbray required a ‘severe facial injury’ after a collision with striker Jay Rodriguez.

The 23-year-old has been given dispensation to spend the next few days with his family back home in Spain.

Upon his return, Raya will see a specialist who will make a further assessment on his fractured nose once the swelling has died down.

Raya was one of three players forced off at The Hawthorns, with captain Charlie Mulgrew having undergone a scan to ascertain the damage to his ribs after a challenging involving Rodriguez.

The Scotland international has already missed three matches so far this season and Rovers will be keen to have him available, if possible, against QPR at Ewood Park.

That cause has been helped by news that the initial scan has shown no fracture of his ribs, but requires further assessment.

His regular defensive partner Darragh Lenihan should overcome the hip injury which saw him miss the West Brom draw, having come off at Swansea City in the 12th minute.

Jack Rodwell has been struggling with a back problem, which went in to spasm in the second half on Saturday, as he added to Rovers’ injury concerns, but should be okay for the weekend.

There was better news for Rovers, and a boost to their defensive options as Ryan Nyambe came through 65 minutes of Rovers Under-23s win over Liverpool on Monday.

Nyambe has missed the last month through a hamstring injury picked up in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest and was close to returning against West Brom last weekend.

And although the 20-year-old travelled with the squad, he wasn’t involved in the matchday 18, and given 65 minutes for the Under-23s to complete his rehabilitation.

Jacob Davenport, who is yet to play for the first team after two separate injury setbacks, opened the scoring with a fine 25 yard strike in what his third appearance for the Under-23s.

After 45 minutes against Brighton, an hour of the Lancashire Senior Cup game against Blackpool, the 19-year-old came through the full game unscathed and will now look to break in to the first team picture for the first time since joining from Manchester City.

Joe Nuttall, who also travelled to West Brom without featuring, played the full game in what was the 21-year-old’s third appearance at this level this season.

Johnson said: “It was always the intention with Ryan to get him through to 60 or 65 minutes and he did that.

“Jacob was keen to get 90 and I think he’s got better with every game.

“As I’ve said before about the lads that drop down, their attitude is always exemplary and those lads showed that again.”
