Rovers boss Tony Mowbray has revealed he gave Lewis Travis the weekend off ‘to get his head right’ after the midfielder saw a loan move fall through.

Travis was expected to leave Ewood on loan before last Friday’s deadline and didn’t travel with the squad for the 4-1 Championship defeat at Bristol City. It was the first matchday squad this season the 20-year-old hasn’t been involved in.

He was subject of interest from League One side Bradford City, only for a loan move to fall through on Thursday, while a switch to League Two outfit Oldham Athletic on deadline day also failed to materialise.

Despite featuring regularly for Rovers so far this term, Travis was understood to be keen on moving to secure first-team football in a bid to further his development.

When asked why the box-to-box midfielder didn’t travel to Ashton Gate, Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph: “Trav was a bit disappointed that he didn’t get the opportunity to go out on loan to play football week-in, week-out.

“I gave him the weekend off just so he could get his head right because he needs to get back in training and get round to it.

“I feel his time in and around our first team will be in the future but he wants game time and unfortunately that didn’t quite happen for him.

“He has to get his head on it now, get on with it and get back in amongst the group.”

Midfielder Jacob Davenport, a summer signing from Manchester City, is yet to feature for Rovers because of a hip flexor problem.

But he is set to boost Rovers’ central options after the international break while Southampton loanee Harrison Reed, an unused sub against Bristol City, is another who will be keen to break in to the Rovers side when they return to action against Aston Villa on September 15.

Rovers sanctioned loan exits for Sam Hart and Lewis Hardcastle last week, who joined Rochdale and Port Vale respectively, while Paul Caddis and Peter Whittingham were released.

Joe Nuttall was also the subject of loan interest but will have to wait until January for his move.

The striker featured in a fourth consecutive fixture when he came off the bench at Ashton Gate.

Rovers failed to add to their senior squad on deadline day, despite attempts to bring in Harry Chapman on loan from Middlesbrough. But Boro’s inability to strengthen out wide meant the 21-year-old was kept by the Riverside club.

Mitchel Candlin was signed from Walsall, initially on loan with a view to a permanent move, but the 18-year-old is set to start life with the Under-23 squad.

Coleraine midfielder Brad Lyons could still make a move to Ewood Park, with Rovers waiting to see if the deal for the 21-year-old is sanctioned by the Football League.

Rovers submitted the paperwork on Friday and are still waiting for approval for the Northern Irishman who would join on loan with a view to a five-figure permanent move.

On the failure to add to his squad on the final day of the loan window, Mowbray added: “I was pretty relaxed about everything really.

“I don’t want to talk about specifics but there was one player we were trying to add who the fans know about.

“It was a frustrating day for him really. They didn’t get the incomings they wanted and it’s a shame as it was a done deal pretty much and yet it didn’t happen because they probably got frustrated.”
