Rovers could still add to their squad before tomorrow’s 5pm loan deadline – but boss Tony Mowbray will only move for already identified targets.

The boss revealed he has been offered countless players but wants to ensure Rovers have done the necessary work on any potential incomings.

Rovers have explored the possibility of bringing back Middlesbrough winger Harry Chapman, but that appears unlikely at this stage.

It is understood Boro boss Tony Pulis would need to add at least one player to his ranks before sanctioning an exit for the 21-year-old who played 16 times for Rovers last season.

Rovers made Ben Brereton their seventh summer signing on Tuesday, 24 hours after bringing in Southampton midfielder Harrison Reed.

But with Dominic Samuel’s knee injury set to mean an extended period on the sidelines, Rovers could still make further moves in the market.

“We’re trying, we’ll wait and see,” Mowbray said. “It’s important to get the ones we want.

“There are dozens of agents ringing every day, leaving texts, throwing random players at you.

“Some of the names are quite tempting but we wouldn’t have done the work, the homework, the background on the personality and character so we’ll bypass them.

“We’ll work hard between now and the next window opens and know what we’re going to do in January and keep building it.

“What we build it off is the platform of the hard work and the enthusiasm we’ve got and then as we try and add quality around it hopefully the group can get strong.”

There could also be outgoings from Rovers, with midfielder Peter Whittingham not featuring in the matchday squad for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Lincoln City.

Rovers are open to offers for the 33-year-old who could depart before the deadline after Reed’s arrival pushed him further down the pecking order.

The signing of the Southampton midfielder could also leave Rovers with a decision to make over whether to allow Lewis Travis to leave on loan, with League One sides showing strong interest in signing the 21-year-old who has played in all but two of the matches so far this season.

Brereton’s move is initially a loan, but will become permanent in January for a fee in the region of £7m.

Rovers saw QPR reject around £4m for midfielder Luke Freeman, while Forest turned down bids in excess of £5m for Brereton earlier this month.

A Premier League youngster, who eventually moved to another Championship club, was also pursued, with Mowbray delighted to get the deal done for Brereton.

And he was pleased with the backing from owners Venky’s.

“The money has always been there but it’s been really hard,” he added.

“I’ve talked about the World Cup and players coming back late, squads going away to their tours, it’s been difficult to release players and get things moving.

“There are three or four deals, similar amounts of money, that didn’t come off for us, clubs wouldn’t sell.

“That’s okay – but we have to show we’re having success on the grass because the owners are not silly people. Maybe in the past they have thrown lots of money at it and it’s not paid dividends.

“We have to make sure they feel we’re moving in the right direction and try and take the club in a sensible manner in the right direction.”
