Two wins and three draws from their opening five league matches represents a “decent start”, according to boss Tony Mowbray.

Rovers extended their unbeaten start to five matches with a 1-0 win over Brentford on Saturday thanks to a Kasey Palmer strike.

That followed-up a 1-0 win at Hull City seven days earlier, with 2-2 draws against Ipswich and Reading and a goal-less draw with Millwall their results so far. That leaves them fifth in the early table, though Rovers could conceivably have at least two more points than they do.

Previously unbeaten Brentford represented their toughest test so far, but upcoming games against Bristol City, Aston Villa, Derby, Stoke City and Nottingham will likely tell us more about Mowbray’s group.

“Okay – two wins out of five, drawn three,” the boss said of the start.

“Coming out of League One we have to view it as a decent start.

“There are some tougher tests along the way I would suggest.

“With total respect to the teams we’ve played, bar Brentford who showed their class and quality, we have some tough tests coming at Bristol City and then home to Aston Villa next.

“We have some tough tests around the corner but as I said to them after the game if you can beat Brentford then you’re going to do all right against a lot of teams.

“I sat and watched a lot of the Villa v Brentford game and they were pretty good in that with a last minute equaliser from Villa to get them a point.”

Bradley Dack scored the winner at Hull City, and also netted in the opening day draw at Ipswich Town.

He has missed the last two matches through injury, while Mowbray was also unable to call upon Adam Armstrong and Dominic Samuel from the win over the Bees.

And that only makes the victory even more impressive.

Mowbray added: “We shouldn’t fear anyone, but we have to respect everyone and work as hard as we did (against Brentford) and see where this season takes us.

“We played without Bradley Dack, we played without Adam Armstrong, Danny Graham played 90 minutes on Wednesday so had to start the game on the bench.

“We were pretty down on resources at the top end of the pitch so really we need some help and that’s we’re trying to do over the next couple of days.”
