CLARETS reporter Tyrone Marshall hands out the ratings from Burnley's 3-1 defeat to Olympiakos in the Europa League play-off round in Athens.
Tom Heaton 6
Baptism of fire on his return to action after 348 days out. Could perhaps have done better with second goal, but solid performance
Phil Bardsley 6
Rash foul on Podence that led directly to first goal. Enjoyed a lot of the ball down right, won clever free-kicks
Kevin Long 7
Best defender. Won numerous headers in the box and made one fantastic last-ditch tackle on Podence in the second half
Ben Gibson 5
The penalty decision is harsh, although you could argue his arm was pointing out. Beaten by Fortunis for foul that led to second goal though
Stephen Ward 6
Faced a tricky customer in Christodoulopoulos and had his difficult moments against him when Olympiakos were pushing
Johann Berg Gudmundsson 7
Burnley’s most creative force. Couple of excellent first half corners that were right on the money, fine wing play to provide cross which Wood headed wide
Jack Cork 6
Great energy all night and set the tempo during Burnley’s good moments in the first half. Struggled to stem the tide early in second half
Jeff Hendrick 6
Looks better in a deeper midfield role when he can face forward. Occasionally eased off the ball, but had his productive moments too
Charlie Taylor 6
Didn’t get much of a chance to get crosses in, but was always looking for the ball. Moved to left-back when Ward went off
Ashley Barnes 7 (Man of the Match)
Played like a man possessed in the first half. Not everything he did came off but he hunted down every ball, fought for every header and looked to offer a pass constantly. Hassled and harried the back four, taunted the ultras beyond the goal and looked to be loving the occasion. The Greek fans hated him within minutes. We’d expect nothing less from him.
Chris Wood 7
Took his penalty well and did really well to win it, getting his body in front of Camara and making sure the contact arrived
