HE might have had a shortened summer break, but Adam Armstrong is excited about the prospect of being back at Ewood Park this weekend.

Armstrong spent the first part of his summer with England at the Toulon tournament, scoring in the group game against Qatar, and came off the bench in the final as the Under-21s secured their third successive title.

It was a first call-up at that level for Armstrong who admits his form during a loan spell at Rovers, in which he scored nine times in 17 starts, prompted Aidy Boothroyd to get in touch.

That tournament finished a month after Rovers’ League One season ended, with Armstrong back training with Newcastle United at the start of last month.

But after securing a move back to Rovers, the 21-year-old is excited by the prospect of a second debut against Millwall this weekend.

He said: “I went to the Toulon tournament for three weeks so I haven’t had much of a break.

“I think the main reason I got called up was because of the form I was in for Blackburn and hopefully I can carry that on this season and push on as a player.

“It’s all gone really quick, the season is here now and I can’t wait to get started.

“I know the holidays go quickly and the season comes round quickly, but you miss it when you’re away.

“Playing football every day is the best job in the world and I just can’t wait to get back out there and start scoring goals.

“Last season was brilliant. It was what I needed in my career at the time.”

Armstrong will be playing Championship football for the third time after loan spells with Barnsley in 2016/17 and Bolton in the first six months of last season.

It is also a third reunion with boss Tony Mowbray, having previously worked under him at Coventry City in 2015/16 as well as the final months of Rovers’ promotion campaign.

Although just 21, Armstrong has 140 career appearances to his name, with 36 goals, and the diminutive attacker added: “I think I am pretty experienced.

“I have played a lot of games and I think I can help people out now on the pitch whereas before they would help me. It’s good to have both sides.

“Hopefully I can knuckle down now and produce my best form for Blackburn Rovers.”
