JACOB Davenport arrives at Ewood Park with just 17 senior appearances to his name but the teenager comes highly rated.

The 19-year-old spent 13 years coming through the ranks at Premier League champions Manchester City and played a key role in helping the Blues’ youngsters to reach successive FA Youth Cup finals in 2016 and 2017.

The central midfielder, who has played mainly in a holding role in his career so far, furthered his development at Burton Albion last season.

He joined the Brewers in January and made 15 starts, scoring one goal, for Nigel Clough’s side in the unsuccessful attempt to stay in the Championship.

Despite relegation, Davenport impressed management and fans alike with a series of composed performances.

He had been linked with Rovers earlier this summer and Ewood boss Tony Mowbray finally got his man this week with Davenport penning a four-year contract after joining for an undisclosed fee.

So what can Rovers fans expect from Davenport in a blue and white shirt?

Burton Mail’s Burton Albion reporter Josh Murphy believes he will be a big hit in East Lancashire.

“I think he will be an excellent signing for Blackburn,” he said of Davenport.

“He had a real impact on performances at Burton. The club was on a low ebb when he joined as they had had a terrible January but he made his debut at Villa Park and was one of the best players on the pitch.

“He was very composed and he more than held his own.

“He was virtually an ever present after that.

“He tended to play deep at Burton as one of three central midfielders and he has an excellent range of passing and is capable of linking play between defence and attack.

“He was consistent in his performances and the supporters were huge fans of his, I am sure if Burton had stayed up then they would have made attempts to bring him back on loan.

“He was excited to play senior football and I think he proved he was more than capable of playing at Championship level.”

Davenport didn’t make a senior appearance for City but was 19th man for a League Cup tie at Wolves last season and came to Burton highly rated by Etihad boss Pep Guardiola.

Speaking after Davenport had moved to the Pirelli Stadium, Burton boss Nigel Clough said: “He’s highly rated by Pep Guardiola and you won’t get a better endorsement than that.”

Clough was similarly impressed after Davenport’s debut against Villa, telling the Burton Mail: “We’ve got to give him the ball. It was his league debut at just 19.

“It’s a big, big day for him and it’s wonderful that he put in such a good performance.”

His Under-23 coach at Manchester City was equally effusive in his qualities.

“Jacob epitomises what we look for in a Manchester City player,” City U23 chief Simon Davies told the Manchester Evening News last November.

“There are always different levels of ability but if we could have Jacob in every player we’d be really happy because of all the little bits: his timekeeping, putting the team first, his attitude to education even if he doesn’t like every aspect of it, he never disrespects anybody, he’s hardworking every day in training and games.

“He’s one of those players that will never have any regrets because whatever level he reaches, he gives his all every day.”
