SEAN Dyche believes the new three-year deal for Johann Berg Gudmundsson is a sign of what Burnley are trying to achieve.

The Iceland winger has signed a contract until the summer of 2021 after a fine second season at Turf Moor.

Gudmundsson suffered an injury-hit first campaign with the Clarets but the 27-year-old has excelled this term, providing eight Premier League assists and two goals.

The 27-year-old had just over a year remaining on his existing deal but he has now become the sixth player to sign a new deal at Turf Moor this season, following in the footsteps of Nick Pope, James Tarkowski, Ashley Barnes, Kevin Long and Stephen Ward.

"I’m really pleased. We try and be open with all of our players and their agents about their contractual situations," Dyche said.

"I think we’re doing well with it, we’re respectful in the sense of what we can do as a club.

"He’s had a very strong season. We saw a lot of good things last season, he had a couple of spells injured but we saw the progress he was making but this season he’s stepped up again.

"It’s another sign of what we’re trying to achieve here by keeping our best players."
