Rovers defenders Darragh Lenihan and Derrick Williams have been named in the Republic of Ireland provisional squad ahead of three upcoming matches.

The pair are both still waiting to make their first caps for their countries but have received their second call-ups after strong performances in the Rovers back four this season.

Both Lenihan and Williams were named in the full squad for the friendly with Turkey on March 23 but were unused substitutes.

They have both previously represented their country at Under-19 and Under-21 level, but this is just their second call-up to the senior side.

Martin O'Neill's side will play three matches, starting with a testimonial match for Scott Brown, when a Republic of Ireland XI will take on a Celtic side to celebrate his career on Sunday, June 20.

The two friendlies will then see them face France in Paris on Monday, May 28 before returning to Dublin to take on the United States on June 2.

The three friendly games act as the final preparation ahead of the UEFA Nations League opener away to Wales on September 6.

The provisional squad, which includes 40 players, will be trimmed down within the next 10 days.

Lenihan returned to fitness for Rovers in February after more than six months out with a fractured metatarsal.

He returned to play 13 times during the run-in and is expected to be a key part of Rovers' plans moving forward.

Williams meanwhile has been a mainstay of the Rovers side since joining from Bristol City in the summer of 2016. He has missed just one league game since Tony Mowbray took charge in February and was crowned Rovers' player of the season last term.

He will compete alongside fellow left-backs Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) and Greg Cunningham (Preston North End) for a spot in the full squad.
