"Did we get a bit of luck? I think we did." That was the assessment of Charlton boss Lee Bowyer after the win over Rovers at The Valley.

Jason Pearce knew very little about the winning goal he scored, the ball deflecting off his back and in to the corner, wrong-footing Jayson Leutwiler.

Charlton goalkeeper Ben Amos made a string of impresssive saves after the break, while Dominic Samuel saw a header hit the bar and bounce down on the line.

And Bowyer told the press after the match: “Did we get a bit of luck? I think we did. I think we deserve a bit of luck because the work rate we put in week in week out. And we got that bit (today).”

Amos denied Jack Payne, Dominic Samuel and Richie Smallwood after the break and Bowyer praised his goalkeeper after the hosts held out for a clean sheet.

He added: “He’s been unreal all season, he’s been unbelievable and I have to say I see Lee Turner working with the goalies day in, day out and I think Ben will say it himself. Lee Turner has made him an outstanding goalkeeper.

“He was a good goalkeeper when he came but now he’s unreal. I’ve played with some top keepers in my time and the saves he’s making are incredible. The work that they put in, Dillon (Phillips), Lee Turner and Ben every day, that’s what you get those type of rewards. For me he has been outstanding all season.”

The win leaves Charlton well placed to claim a play-off spot going in to their final game of the season.

They have won six of their nine matches under Bowyer who said: “I think it was a big step, looking at other results we obviously needed to win but like I said before it’s in our hands.

“Again I can’t praise the lads enough. It’s about them and the commitment and fight that they’ve put in again.

“It’s immense, our fans from start to finish, again – what an atmosphere.

“Three points were massive, we have to go to Rochdale now, it is in our hands, one game to go. It’s good.”
