SEAN Dyche will delay Tom Heaton's return to a matchday squad to make sure the club captain doesn't run the risk of breaking down again.
Dyche said Heaton is desperate to return having played four full games on his comeback from shoulder surgery, two behind-closed-doors and two for the Under-23s.
But Heaton is unlikely to be involved against West Brom this weekend, with Dyche is urging caution as the 31-year-old returns from the dislocated shoulder he suffered in September.
That means Nick Pope will continue in goal, with Dyche's decision over who takes the gloves delayed for at least a week.
"I spoke to him in the week about it, I’m probably go the other way a little bit, I’m a little bit cautious with injuries," the Clarets chief said.
"The aim is to come back once, be a little bit careful and cautious, and make sure.
"Some players find it hard. Tom is chomping, and it’s probably me more than him, saying ‘just have another week with us’, but he’s clear-minded, and I’m just saying make sure.
"Be doubly sure everything is good."
Dyche will be given food for thought by Heaton's return, with Pope impressing in his absence and forcing his way into the England squad during the international break.
"They’re both very good, but Tom’s nearly, he’s not quite there yet. He wants to be there, it’s me saying calm down a little bit," Dyche said.
"When it comes round we’ll make a decision like we do with all others on the pitch. You can only play 11.
"I’m not overthinking it. When they’re both ready I’ll know how to make a decision because that’s my job."
