‘Hungry’ Lewis Travis should gain confidence from his impressive showing off the bench in Rovers’ comeback against Oldham Athletic.

That’s the view of boss Tony Mowbray who saw the 20-year-old help change the game as Rovers battled back from 2-0 down to earn a point against the Latics.

Travis has been around the first-team set-up for the past four months but is yet to make a league start. But the Academy graduate impressed in central midfield having made the step up from the Under-23s.

Mowbray said: “It should give him huge confidence, he changed positions seamlessly, so equally comfortable out wide playing as an attacking full-back or wing-back.

“To go and play central midfield and rotate that position with (Elliott) Bennett was seamless.

“He’s a mature young lad Trav, he’s always knocking on my door, if he’s not playing for the first-team he wants to play the next night for the Under-23s, he’s very hungry to play football.

“We have to feed that by not disappointing him too often and giving him game-time and I’m sure his personality and character will demand he gets in the team as move forward.”

Travis was rewarded with a new long-term deal earlier this month and has made eight appearances in all competitions this season, including three in the league.

And Mowbray says the youngster will continue to be in his thoughts in the remaining weeks of the season.

He added: “Travis, that’s why we gave him a new contract.

“I’m conscious that the players have got us where they have, we’ve won a lot of football matches, we’re currently third in the league with a chance of finishing in the top two.

“Trav has had his opportunity really through some injuries, we’ve had six first-team players out for the last month and a half.

“He has broken in and if he gets on the pitch and performs like that then he will stay in the team, because they have to do a job, that’s what they’ve all been told.

“There can’t be any favourites, it can’t be what you’ve done in the past, you have to perform and get the job done and Travis is a very hungry young man who wants to play football.”
